Papon was born on 24th November 1975 in Nagaon, Assam. He belongs to a musical family and was introduced to music at a young age. His father, Khagen Mahanta, was a renowned folk singer and composer, and his mother, Archana Mahanta, was also a singer. Papon’s childhood was spent in a musical environment, and he developed an interest in music from an early age.
Papon started his musical journey by learning traditional Assamese music from his parents. He later trained in classical music and started performing in local shows and festivals. In 1998, he moved to Delhi to pursue a career in music. He worked as a session musician and performed with several bands before forming his own band called ‘Papon and the East India Company.’
